JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – After nearly two months of discussion and research, the Jamestown Public Works Committee moved to approve a Citywide Cleanup for the week of May 10th through the 14th.

Sanitation Foreman Shawn O’Neill informed the committee that if they were to move forward with the cleanup, he would not have enough staff at this time to conduct the weeklong event.

O’Neill stated they would need to rent two loaders with six part-time employees to help during the week. Councilmember David Steele stated that Deputy Auditor Jay Sveum would be tasked with finding part-time work for the week.

He added rules would need to be established if the city were to go ahead with hold the Cleanup Week.

O’Neill says they would look to remove bagged and cardboard box items and return to the original intention of citywide cleanup.

Mayor Dwaine Heinrich added that they should look to be proactive to cut down on those who abuse the cleanup week or don’t follow the guidelines correctly.

Councilmember Dan Buchanan was not in favor of returning the citywide cleanup week, asking the committee further think about the problems that have come from past events.

The committee moved to recommend approving a citywide cleanup May 10th through the 14th with Councilmembers Dan Buchanan and Brian Kamlitz voting in opposition.

The city will finalize the decision at their May meeting.

In other committee information, O’Neill reports their $5 pickup program will be ready to rollout sometime this June.
