JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Growing scientific evidence has indicated indoor air may be more polluted than outdoor air according to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ).

Justin Otto, Environmental Scientist with the state DEQ, says we spend a lot of our time indoors.

Because of this, risks to health may be great due to exposure to air pollution indoors rather than outdoors. Otto says when it comes to homes, it’s up to the individual to ensure it’s free of possible pollutants.

Things such as mold and moisture, sewer gas, environmental tobacco smoke, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, mercury, asbestos, flood response, lead-based paint, and radon might be things to consider.

Otto added that radon was one of the constant thing homeowners may deal with when it comes to indoor air quality.

Radon is a known carcinogen, which means prolonged exposure to high levels of Radon gas can cause cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has declared Radon to be the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

Otto says they have all this information available on their website deq.nd.gov. He will also be present at the Jamestown Chamber’s Home & Garden Show on April 10th and 11th at the Jamestown Civic Center with the same information.
