JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Nationally, April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

On Wednesday, March 31st, Jamestown Mayor Dwaine Heinrich proclaimed Tuesday, April 6th as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Day in the city of Jamestown.

“National data shows that more than one in three women and nearly one in four men have experienced sexual violence during their lifetime and one in ten children will experience sexual abuse often resulting in long term effects that can impact individuals, families, communities and society at large,” Safe Shelter Sexual Assault Services Coordinator Mary Thysell stated. “In 2020, Safe Shelter assisted 35 victims of sexual assault, fifteen of whom were primary victims with whom we had personal contact.”

In order to show support to survivors of sexual assault, you’re being asked to wear the color teal on Tuesday, April 6th.

We will have Thysell on Let’s Talk About It to discuss the proclamation and Safe Shelters work in Jamestown.
