JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The planning commission will be exploring an ordinance that would allow residents to use corrugated steel for their homes within city limits.

The popular siding on single family dwellings, also referred to as “shouses” or Shed houses, currently would not be allowed within city limits.

City Building Inspector Tom Blackmore.

The ordinance was based on language from a manufactured home, which Blackmore says they’ve been enforcing the past few years.

Councilmember Dave Steele says right now, there are now houses within city limits with full steel siding. He added that times and building materials have changed since the ordinance was created.

Steel added the biggest concern would be the size of the shouse. He suggested a small committee that could be formed that could look into building requests.

Mayor Dwaine Heinrich added that the trend of “shouses” has become popular as of late.

Councilmember Dan Buchanan pointed out that the ordinance should be looked at closely by the planning commission, who could come back to the city with some ideas on how to proceed.

The motion was passed unanimously.
