Fargo, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)——-The Carrington Cardinals wrestling team capped off a very successful 2021 state wrestling tournament with a third place finish in the class B duel tournament. Unseeded coming into the tournament, the Cardinals knocked off the number 2 seed New Salem-Almont (NSA) 39-24. The Cardinals would fall to South Border (SB), the number 3 seed, 40-27 in the semifinals before defeating the Pembina County North (PCN) Grizzlies 47-30 in the third place match. Lisbon was the number 1 seed in the duel tournament, Velva was fourth seed, and PCN was the five seed.

The Cardinals picked up a pair of early and key wins in the duel with Trevor Hoggarth (state runner-up at 138 pounds) moving up to the 145 pound class and defeated the number 7 seed Cody Irwin by fall at 2:56 seconds of the second period. Brecken Lura (state champion at 145 pounds) also bumped up 1 weight class to 152# and defeated the third place state finisher Ethan Hammons 8-6, giving the Cardinals a 9-0 team lead and set the tone early on the overall outcome. Other key wins in the duel for the Cardinals at 182 pounds as state champion Michael Clifton picked up a major decision 12-4 victory over Mason Olander. Kaulder Kvamme recorded a win by pin at 195# over Lane Huber. Beau Retzlaff (state champion at 220#) recorded a pin in just 58 seconds over Cole Nagel and Trace Hoggarth (4th place at 106#) moved up 1 weight class to 113# and earned a win by fall at 1:08 of the first period over Trenton Klatt. Matthew Duchscherer (126#), Corbin Clifton (132#), and Kael Kovar (138#) also picked up victories to aid the Cardinal victory.

The Mustangs recorded pins at 160, 170, 195, 285, and 113 pounds to aid the victory in the semifinal round. Michael Clifton (182#), Beau Retzlaff (220#), & Trace Hoggarth (106#) recorded pins for the Cardinals. Brecken Lura, Treston Lura, & Matthew Duchscherer also picked up wins in the duel for Carrington.

Senior Austin Trelstad (285#), in his final high school match picked up a huge win by fall over Andre LeTexier in a quick time of just 26 seconds that seemed to turn the momentum to the Cardinals, tying the duel score at 18-18. Trace Hoggarth (106#) followed the Trelstad pin with a quick fall also at 42 seconds over Logan Warner. Matthew Duchscherer (126# state runner-up) earned a hard fought 15-9 decision over Trevor Hinkle (state champion at 126#). Duchscherer lost to Hinkle in the state title match a day earlier 6-3. Other Cardinals winning by fall were Michael Clifton (182#), Beau Retzlaff (220#), Corbin Clifton (132#), Trevor Hoggarth (138#), and Brecken Lura (152#) to seal the third place finish. The Grizzlies defeated Carrington in the region 2 duel championships 3 weeks earlier.
