MOORHEAD, MINN. – Valley City State University athletes won 10 events and set a new school record Saturday during their final regular season indoor track meet.
The Vikings competed Saturday at the Cobber COVID Duals, hosted by Concordia College-Moorhead. VCSU’s men and women both finished second at the three-team event. VCSU defeated Southwest Minnesota State in both duals and dropped their duals against Concordia.
The Viking women won six events and set a new school record in the 4×200 meter relay. VCSU’s men won four events Saturday.
VCSU’s female sprinters were impressive with four victories on Saturday. The 4×200 relay team won the race and set a new school record, crossing the line in 1:51.29. The team of Taylor Sargent, Brooke Malsom, Ashanti Guertin and Keolani Sayles shaved 0.62 seconds off the old school record of 1:51.91, which was set in 2002 by Randi Tompt, Sara Trone, Haillie Anderson and Karri Turnbough.
Guertin also picked up two individual victories on Saturday, winning both the 200 meters (28.05) and 400 meters (1:02.40). Malsom won the 60 meters in a time of 8.12 as VCSU’s women swept first place in the main sprinting events.
Malsom also added a first-place finish in the long jump, topping the field with her mark of 5.06 meters (16-7.25). Brook Tibke took home first place in the pole vault, clearing 2.60 meters (8-6.25).
In men’s action, Valley City State took first place in both the 4×200 and 4×400 relays. The team of Clay Kummer, Cody Jundt, Konnor Stueve and Cody Fuchs won the 4×200 in a time of 1:33.62. Stueve, Fuchs, Kummer and Alex Otto combined to win the 4×400 relay in a season-best time of 3:33.89.
Fuchs raced to an individual first place in the 400 meters, crossing the finish line in 52.37 seconds. Otto picked up an individual win in the high jump, clearing 1.95 meters (6-4.75). Otto remains undefeated in the high jump this season, winning all four meets he has competed in.
Up next: Valley City State University will compete at the North Star Athletic Association Indoor Championships on Sunday, Feb. 21. The conference meet will be held in Yankton, S.D.
