JAMESTOWN, ND. (NewsDakota.com) – The University of Jamestown athletics had a busy weekend, with four teams in action.
HOCKEY: Jamestown split the two-game series with Midland over the weekend, losing in the first game 8-4 before prevailing 7-3 in game two. In game one, UJ received goals from Reid Wilson, Jordon Kromm, Logan Berggren, and Michael Heitkamp. The goal for Heitkamp was the first of his Jimmies career.
In the weekend finale, Kromm and Wilson each tallied another goal in the 7-3 victory. Jamestown also got production from Vladislav Zamzhytski, Aidan Potas, Greg Susinski, and Jake Huculak (2). The Jimmies are now 12-8-4 on the year and host Minot State on February 19th. Kromm leads the team with 22 points this season, and Huculak is in second with 20.
WRESTLING: Two Jimmies took first and nine others placed in the top four at Midland University on Saturday. Last week’s NAIA Wrestler of the Week Rayana Sahagun went 2-0 to take first place at 109 pounds Sahagun is currently the #2 wrestler at 109.
Junior Arianna Marrufo, who is #1 in the KCAC at 123, won all three of her matches by tech fall. The next time Jamestown competes on the mat will be on February 27th in Newman Arena in the KCAC Conference Championship.
SOFTBALL: The Jimmies softball team went 1-1 at the PC Dome on Saturday in games against Minot State and Briar Cliff.
Jamestown lost 2-1 against Minot State in the first game of the afternoon. Kat Miska had another dominant performance on the mound, going six innings, striking out 10, and allowing just one earned run. The lone run of the day for the Jimmies came in the second inning off a home run from junior Kassi Ward. Both Minot State and Jamestown totaled just five hits each in the game.
Against Briar Cliff, Jamestown scored seven runs in the fourth inning to win 10-6 over the Chargers. Morgan Geizler and Santina Zito each had two hits and two runs driven in. Katie Reisdorfer and Sydney Prussia also collected two hits each.
Lucy Sinkkonen picked up the victory for Jamestown. The Jimmies improved to 4-2 overall on the year and will head back to the PC Dome next weekend to take on four different teams, including Valley City State on Friday at noon.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: #7 Jamestown easily swept Morningside in three sets on Friday. UJ hit .439 as a team in the victory over the Mustangs.
Zack Meyer led the Jimmies in kills with nine on 14 attacks. Samuel Jackman had seven kills as well, and five other Jimmie players picked up kills. Derek Correa and Caylor Cox each recorded double-digit assists in the win. Jamestown only had eight attack errors compared to 20 for Morningside.
UJ is now 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the GPAC. The Jimmies have another conference game on Tuesday when they host Dordt University. The lone loss of the season for Jamestown came against #1 Grand View, and the Jimmies will have an opportunity to avenge their loss on the 19th when they take on the Vikings on the road.
