MAYVILLE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City State women’s basketball team couldn’t hold onto its lead Friday night as Mayville State used a 33-point fourth quarter to defeat the Vikings, 83-77.

Valley City State falls to 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the North Star. Mayville State improves to 9-2 on the season and 4-1 in the conference.

Trailing 22-16 after the first 10 minutes of play, the Vikings opened the second quarter with a 10-5 run to close the gap to just three points. Maara Nelson‘s 13 second quarter points helped the Vikings inch closer. Three straight 3’s from Adriana TorresEmma Nielsen, and Macey Kvilvang allowed the Vikings to take a 40-34 advantage at halftime.

Valley City State led by as much as 14 points with 3:08 left in the third quarter on a bucket from Kvilvang. Mayville then took an 11-2 to close the gap to just five points heading into the final quarter of play.

With 8:32 to go, Mayville’s Sydney Magsam hit a three-pointer in the corner to take over the lead but was answered with a three-pointer from Taryn Dieterle. Erin Walcker then hit another three-pointer for the Comets as Mayville State took the lead for good to finish with the victory.

Maara Nelson‘s 20 points led the Viking offense Friday, while Macey Kvilvang added 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Taryn Dieterle chipped in 13 points, and Adriana Torres added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Vikings.

Valley City State shot 37 percent from the field (30-81), 41 percent on three-pointers (9-22), and 67 percent on free throws (8-12). Mayville State shot 47 percent from the field (30-64), 41 percent on three-pointers (7-17), and 62 percent from the free throw line (16-26).

Valley City State converted 20 points off of 23 Comet turnovers Friday. Mayville State held the rebounding advantage 52-37, including 12 on the offensive glass.

Jordan Zrust led the Comets with a double double, scoring 25 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Danneka Voegeli added 18 points and nine rebounds

UP NEXT: Valley City State travels to Presentation College for another conference doubleheader on Saturday. The women are scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. with the men to follow at 5 p.m.
