VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City High School instrumental students competed in the EDC/State instrumental contest on Friday, December 11th at Valley City High School.

VCHS entered a total of 19 soloists in the contest. The students received 0-III(three) ratings, 1-II(two) rating, 5-I(one) ratings, 12- region star ratings and 4- state star ratings. Valley City High School also had three students also receive

Outstanding Performance (OP) ratings which means that they were the best performance in their category in that particular venue that entire day, a huge honor. Britta Roehrich on flute, Aurora Ziniel on clarinet and Alexa Kjelland on french horn received OP’s for their performances at the contest. The students performed very well and represented VCHS with a strong showing at the contest.

The ratings are classified as follows: III – fair performance, II – good performance, I – excellent performance, region star – superior performance and state star – state superior performance, OP – Outstanding Performance
Receiving a II rating was Tucker Schonert on his tuba solo.

Receiving I ratings were Hailey Thoreson (alto saxophone), Faith Orner (snare drum), Tucker Schonert (baritone horn), Kailer Logan (timpani) and Jerrica Eldridge (clarinet).

Receiving Region Star ratings were Kailer Logan (snare drum), Owen Plagens (trombone), Buddy Scherr (tuba), Tucker Orner (trumpet), Abby Redfearn (alto saxophone), Tyana Judd (alto saxophone), Hadley Thoreson (alto saxophone) and Tucker Johnson (snare drum).

Receiving Region and State Star ratings (the highest rating at the contest) were Luke Plagens (french horn), Aurora Ziniel (clarinet), Alexa Kjelland (french horn) and Britta Roehrich (flute).

In addition to region and state stars the following students received an Outstanding Performance award for their performance…Britta Roehrich (flute), Aurora Ziniel (clarinet) and Alexa Kjelland (french horn).

The soloists were accompanied on piano by long time Valley City accompanist Cyndi Hill, who has for many years been “instrumental” helping VCHS students achieve consistently high ratings at contest.

All in all, it was a great day for Valley City High School instrumental students as they were very successful in the EDC/State music solo contest.
