VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Valley City ended the first half on a 13-2 run to take a 24-20 lead. A lead that expanded to as much as eleven in the second half. But the Hi-Liners would have to hold off a scrappy Wahpeton team for a 57-53 win Friday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
Dylann Diegel’s three pointer with 1:00 remaining in the first half gave Valley City the lead for good at 19-18. Tesa Olson would grab a rebound on Wahpeton next possession and take it all the way down and hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to make it 22-18 Hi-Liners with 38 seconds remaining. That lead would stay at four at the half 24-20.
The lead would stay between one and six points for most of early stages of the second half. Dieterle’s 15 foot jumper with 12:45 remaining gave Valley City a 39-30 lead, their largest of the game.
Brooke Eggermont’s bucket off an offensive rebound gave Valley City a 52-41 lead with 8:13 remaining. That was the biggest lead of the night for the Hi-Liners. But Wahpeton would make things interesting with a 12-4 run of it’s own. Aiyana Allard’s three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining cut the lead to 56-53, but that would as close as Wahpeton would get.
McKenna Koolmo led the Huskies with 15 points. Scout Woods had 12 points and a team high nine rebounds.
Dieterle led the Hi-Liners with 15 points, six rebounds and four assists. Brooke Eggermont and Peyton Pederson each had a double-double. Eggermont had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Pederson had 12 points and a team high 11 rebounds. Dylann Diegel and Tesa Olson each had seven points and seven rebounds.
With the win, Valley City improves to 2-5 in the Eastern Dakota Conference and 3-4 overall. The Huskies fall to 1-6 in the conference and overall.
The Hi-Liners are off until next Friday when the host West Fargo Sheyenne. The Huskies host the Mustangs on Saturday.
