Jamestown, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The boy’s Stutsman County Basketball Tournament continued on Friday at the Jamestown Civic Center with four games.  Saturday will conclude the tournament, with four more games beginning at 2 pm with games following every two hours.  Results from the second day:

Medina-Pingree-Buchanan Thunder 57 – South Border Mustangs 47

The MPB Thunder jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter then held steady to beat the South Border Mustangs in the first game of action on Friday.  The Thunder led 17-6 after the first quarter, and that hole proved too big to dig out of for the Mustangs, who actually outscored the Thunder 41-40 over the rest of the game.

Sloppy play was the name of the game for the Mustangs in the first half, as they shot 5-13 on free throws and turned the ball over twice as often as the Thunder.  The biggest lead of the game came in the third quarter, when MPB led 33-14.  The Mustangs did go on a run to bring the game to single digits in the fourth, but they could not get over the hump to get any closer, and the Thunder closed out the game with free throws, finishing 16-22 from the line.

Joshua Moser led the Thunder with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and he was supported ably by Rylen Wick, who scored 16 and had 10 rebounds.  For the Mustangs, Kaden Bader scored 13 points to lead the way, while Seth Wolf chipped in 9 of his own.  The Thunder will move on the play in the 5th place game Saturday at 4 pm against the Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter Imperials, while the Mustangs will head to the 7th place game at 2pm against the Kidder County Wolves.

Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter Imperials 58 – Kidder County Wolves 52

In an upset, according to pre-tournament rankings, the NGS Imperials raced out to a big half time lead against the Kidder County Wolves, then held on against a furious comeback to seal the game and win in the second game of action on the day.  After leading 17-12 entering the second quarter, the Imperials proceeded to outscore the Wolves 21-5 in the second quarter, taking a 38-17 lead into the half.

Guards Jaxcen Glatt and Jordan Kuipers had the hot hands in the first half for the Imperials, with Glatt hitting three three-pointers in the first quarter and Kuipers adding three of his own deep balls in the second quarter.  Glatt ended the game with 11 points, and Kuipers came off the bench to finish with 13.

In the second half, the Wolves turned up the pressure and started coming at the Imperials more.  Guard Jayden Rath carried the load for the Wolves in the second half, hitting a three-point shot and attacking the basket at every opportunity.  Rath finished 5-6 on free throws and had 20 points.  In the end, the Wolves had dug too big of a hole and ran out of time, ultimately falling short in their comeback.  Luke Rath had 14 points for the Wolves, while Jonah Harter added 10.

Kayden Sperle led the Imperials in scoring with 16 points, and Trenton Erbele had 14 points and 16 rebounds.  Both teams had only five players score in the game.  The Imperials will move on to the 5th place game at 4 pm Saturday against the Medina-Pingree-Buchanan Thunder, and the Wolves fall to the 7th place game at 2 pm against the South Border Mustangs.
