Jamestown, ND (NewsDakota.com) – The boy’s Stutsman County Tournament started Thursday at the Jamestown Civic Center with four games of action. Friday and Saturday will include four games as well, starting at 2 pm each day with games following every two hours. Results from the first day:
Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels 62 – South Border Mustangs 26
The EKM Rebels finished the first quarter with a 23-0 lead and did not look back as they cruised to a 36 point win over the South Border Mustangs in the first game of the tournament. Seniors Alex Huber and Chayse Entzi led the Rebels with 24 and 17 points, respectively, and Entzi added 12 rebounds, including 6 on the offensive end.
The Mustangs started to get in a rhythm in the second quarter, scoring 13 points, even as the Rebels scored 16. The second half was lower scoring (23-13 in favor of the Rebels), but the fourth quarter had a running clock through the whole quarter and a big portion played by younger players for both teams.
Kaden Bader led the Mustangs in scoring with six points, as he shot 2-3 on three-pointers. Jackson Meidinger, Trevor Schmidt, and Kaleb Thiery all chipped in four. The Mustangs will play the Medina-Pingree-Buchanon Thunder Friday at 2 pm, while the Rebels will take on the Griggs-Midkota Titans at 6 pm.
Griggs-Midkota Titans 47 – Medina-Pingree-Buchanon Thunder 38
The Griggs-Midkota Titans moved on to the semifinals of the Stutsman County Tournament by outlasting the Medina-Pingree-Buchanon Thunder 47-38 in the second game of the day. The game was close throughout, with no team ever getting a double digit lead (the final score was the largest difference in score). The Titans led by two points after both the second and third quarter, before blowing things open with shooting in the fourth.
The score was still tight half-way through the fourth quarter, but the Titans hit two three-point shots in a matter of minutes to extend the lead. Hunter Gronneberg led all scorers with 14 points, including three three-pointers and adding four assists. His brother, Jaxon Gronneberg, helped with nine points, while senior center Tanner Haugen chipped in eight.
Despite winning the turnover battle one to five in the first half and six to nine for the game, the Thunder struggled to turn their opportunities into points, shooting just over 35% from the field, including 3-17 on three-pointers. Sawyer Wanzek and Joshua Moser led the Thunder in scoring, both with 10 points. Moser added six rebounds and three assists. The Thunder will play the South Border Mustangs Friday at 2 pm, while the Titans will play the EKM Rebels at 6 pm.
Carrington 63 Kidder County 58, OT
Another District 5 team moved into the semifinal round as the four seed from District 5 beat the number one seed from District 6 the Wolves of Kidder County in overtime. Carrington jumped out to an early 10-2 lead and led for most of the contest. KC fought back to go ahead 55-54 with 34 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals would get a field goal from Lucas Hendrickson and KC would get a free throw to tie the game at 56 and send it into OT. The Cardinals outscored the Wolves 7-2 in overtime to get the victory. The Cardinals had four players in double figures, Hendrickson and Hudson Topp led the way with 18, Topp dropped in six 3-pointers. Hudson Schmitz and Jack Erickson added 11 each, Schmitz had a double double with 14 rebounds. The Wolves were led by Payton Cauthon with 19, Luke Rath 13, 12 each for Jonah Harter and Jayden Rath. Carrington improves to 2-4 overall, KC drops to 2-3 overall.
Ellendale 60 Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter 36
The semifinal round will feature all District 5 teams on Friday as Ellendale’s Riley Thorpe hit six 3-pointers and ended with 20 points to help the Ellendale Cardinals defeat the Imperials of NGS in the last game of the day on Thursday. 6’7″ Center Scott Wagner added 12 points and nine rebounds for Ellendale. The Cardinals shot 45% from the field and made 10 3-pointers. NGS was led by Jaxcen Glatt with 13 points.
