Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—–The Carrington Cardinals wrestling team lost just 1 actual match and defeated Harvey-Wells County (HWC) 63-9 in a Region 2 duel matchup. The Hornets picked up a forfeit victory at 113 pounds and also received a hard fought 13-9 decision from Nick Dossenko at 160 pounds over Drew Schroeder. The most exciting match of the night almost had the upset for Schroeder, but Dossenko picked up a late takedown in the third period to earn victory.
Carrington scored victories by pin at six weight classes and two additional wins by forfeit over the young HWC squad. Treston Lura (120), Matthew Duchscherer (126), Brecken Lura (145), Kaulder Kvamme (195), Beau Retzlaff (220), and Austin Trelstad (285) all picked up wins by pin. Johnny Lura (152) and Wyatt Walker (170) picked up the forfeit victories.
Michael Clifton (182) and state runner-up at 170 pounds last year defeated Carsen Mertz (170) who moved up a weight class to wrestle Clifton, a 9-3 decision for Clifton. Mertz finished 5th last year at the state tournament at 160 pounds.
Trace Hoggarth (106) won a 16-0 technical foul victory over Hudson Hayton of the Hornets at 4:46 of the third period. Hoggarth is 1 of 4 Cardinal wrestlers that remains undefeated on the year as he moves to 11-0. Duchscherer (10-0), Retzlaff (9-0), & Brecken Lura (9-0) are the other undefeated wrestlers for the Cards. Other Cardinal victories came from Corbin Clifton at 132 pounds with a 4-2 decision over Kayl Sieg in a battle of 8th graders. Kael Kovar (138) picked up a major decision over Noah Herrington 12-0.
Carrington improved to 4-1 in duels & HWC lost their first dual of the season. Carrington will travel to Minot on Saturday to compete in the Bishop Ryan tourney starting at 10:00 A.M. & all Cardinal wrestling will be aired on AM 1600 KDAK (THE CARDINAL), FM 100.1, and www.newsdakota.com
