KULM, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Oakes Tornadoes girls’ basketball team continued their hot start to the season by beating the Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Rebels 65-50
Tuesday night.  The win moved the Tornadoes to 4-0 on the season.

Oakes started the game by bringing pressure and pace at the Rebels, breaking through the Rebels’ full-court press for layups while applying a press of their own.  The result was a 21-13 lead after the first quarter, including 11 points from sophomore Laikyn Roney.

The second quarter started a lot the same, with senior Sadie Hansen taking over the scoring duties (12 points in the second quarter), until a flurry before halftime brought the Rebels back within shouting distance.  Sophomore Kiara Jangula hit three three-pointers in the second quarter, including two in the final minutes of the half, to bring the halftime score to 40-28.

The two teams held even in the third quarter as both teams struggled with turnovers and execution.  Entering the fourth quarter with a 50-38 lead, the Tornadoes got a scare as the Rebels were able to cut the lead down to six points.  A three-pointer by Hansen extended the lead to nine, and that was as close as the Rebels ever got.

Jangula finished with a team-high 21 points for the Rebels, including five three-pointers.  Freshman Mataeya Mathern scored 12 points, and junior Emily Kinzler added nine.  For the Tornadoes, they were mainly led by Hansen (26 points and four three-pointers) and Roney (23 points) who made their impact felt on the entire game by adding stout
defense and slick passing.  Sophomore Emma Muggli added eight points of her own.
