VALLY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fargo Shanley used a 15-0 run in the first half to take a 12 point lead and held that lead the rest of the game in a 68-52 win over Valley City in boys basketball Tuesday night at the Hi-Liner Activity Center.
Valley City took its only lead at 5-4 on a bucket inside by Calahan Burchill then extended the lead to 7-4 on a basket underneath by Drew Zaun with 15:33 to go in the first half. That would be the last lead the Hi-Liners would have. The Deacons would hold the Hi-Liners scoreless for the next 6:40 and go on a 15-0 run to open up a 19-7 lead. The two teams would be dead even the rest of the half 22-22 for a 41-29 lead at the half.
The Hi-Liners would get to within nine at 44-35 after two free throws by Peyton Zaun with 15:32 to go. But the lead would get to be as much as 18 at one point in the second half when the Deacons led 62-44 with 8:50 remaining.
Connor Kraft led the Deacons with 15 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Kraft scored 13 of those in the second half. Matthew Hulstein added 15 for Shanley with five rebounds. Braden DeKeyser added 10 points. Emmet Kenney had 9 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tyler Kraft had a team high seven assists. Dylan Erholtz chipped in seven rebounds as the Deacons outrebounded the Hi-Liners 39-26.
Peyton Zaun led Valley City with 22 points, five steals and two blocks. Jared Eggermont was also in double figures with 10 points and a team high seven rebounds. Adam Bitz and Alex Thornton each had three assists.
The Hi-Liners fall to 1-5 on the season and 0-4 in the Eastern Dakota Conference. Shanley is now 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the EDC.
Valley City is off until next Tuesday when they host Grand Forks Red River for a 2-point game in the EDC standings. The Deacons will have one more game before the new year when they travel to West Fargo Sheyenne on Thursday.
