FARGO, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fargo Oak Grove used an 11-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to take a 56-48 lead on the way to a 72-64 win over Valley City in high school boys basketball Monday night at the Gorder Gym at Oak Grove.
After a fast paced first quarter, things slowed down a bit in the second quarter. Valley City would have a 12-4 run to end the first to lead 23-15 after the first eight minutes. But the Hi-Liners would cool off in the second quarter where the Grovers outscored Valley City 16-7 to take a 31-30 lead at the break. Connor Asche had 18 of his game high 22 points in the first half for Oak Grove.
Neither team would take control of the game in the third quarter. Valley City would start the quarter on a 9-3 run to take a 39-34 lead, but Oak Grove would end the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 44-41 lead heading into the final period.
Again, like the third quarter, Valley City would come out strong to start the fourth. Using a 7-1 run, led by Jared Eggermont’s four points and a three by Aiden Jacobson, the Hi-Lines would take a 48-45 lead.
But that is when the Grovers would turn up the defensive pressure and start their game changing run.
Cody Card’s left hand baseline layup off a spin move with 4:47 to go would give Oak Grove a 49-48 lead. After Trevon Rodriquez stole the inbounds, he found Connor Asche on the left wing for a three pointer 10 seconds later to make it 52-48. Asche made six three pointers on the night. Noah Swenson would put the game away hitting on five of six free throws in the late stages of the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Along with Asche’s 22 points, Mason Martinson had 15 and Swenson finished with 12.
Peyton Zaun led the Hi-Liners with 15 points. Jared Eggermont added 11 and Calahan Burchill had eight, all in the first half.
This was the season opener for both team. Valley City will go back to Fargo Tuesday for a matchup with Davies. Oak Grove, who was receiving votes in the preseason Class B boys poll, will face Beulah in the Jimmie Classic next Monday.
