HELENA, MONT. (vcsuvikings.com)  – The Valley City State women’s basketball team concluded play at the Carroll Thanksgiving Classic Saturday, falling to Montana State University-Northern, 84-49.

Valley City State falls to 1-3 this season. Montana State University-Northern improves to 1-1 overall.

MSU-Northern jumped out to a hot start early Saturday, taking a 23-7 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Vikings inched closer in the second quarter, with Emma Nielsen hitting a three-pointer to trail 32-18 with 4:16 on the clock. Then after a Skylight missed shot, Adriana Torres pulled down the defensive rebound and took it all the way back for a layup, closing the gap to 12 points. That would be as close as the Vikings could get though, as the Skylights led 43-24 at the half and continued to expand their lead to defeat the Vikings 84-49.

Dani Schwanke scored a team-high 14 points for the Vikings while Adriana Torres added 11. Maara NelsonEmma Nielsen and Taryn Dieterle each scored six points, and Dieterle added eight rebounds and two steals for the Vikings Saturday.

The Vikings shot 25 percent from the field (15-59), 12 percent on three-pointers (2-17), and 61 percent from the free throw line (17-28). The Skylights shot 47 percent from the field (30-64), 30 percent on three-pointers (6-20), and 82 percent on free throws (18-22). The Skylights also out rebounded the Vikings 56-30.

UP NEXT: Valley City State opens conference play next weekend when they host Dickinson State on Saturday, Dec. 5. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
