CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – As the colder months approach, the Foster County Soil Conservation District is encouraging everyone to prepare their trees for the fall and winter.

Easton Brown, Foster County Soil Conservation District Technician, says this is something that is often overlooked over the fall months.

Brown says snowpack provides insulation and moisture for the tree while sheltering it from the bitter cold and winter conditions.

He added that even though we are a few weeks away from any snow at this time, it’s not a bad idea to start preparing your young trees now.

Tree survival can be more impacted along hilltops and field edges, so Brown says leave taller grass stubble or residue, such as standing crop, to catch some of the snow.

While packing these trees, Brown encourages you to mark where these young trees are so you don’t run them over while moving snow this winter.

With the cold temps, Brown says preventing wildlife damages to young trees is also important.

Brown encourages precautions for mice and voles as well. He says they have Plantskydd as a deterrent to keep vermin off your seedlings this winter.
