VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The following is a news release by Andrea Nelson executive director of the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation.
We are pleased to announce the recipients of our 2020 Community Grant Round. Thanks to the generosity of our community through our annual fundraising event last fall, we were able to award $24,700 to nine nonprofits in Barnes County. Nonprofit organizations were encouraged to participate by submitting an application for projects that impact our community through a competitive grant round with requests totaling just under $73,000 by 21 different organizations.
The Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation Board of Directors made awards based on projects that address current or emerging community needs, create a deep and lasting positive impact, and demonstrates quality planning and management.
Sheyenne River Valley Chapter- North Country Trail was awarded $750 toward trail improvements, signage, and fence stiles. “The Sheyenne River Valley Chapter of the North Country Trail appreciates the support of the Sheyenne Valley Community Foundation in helping to make our trail great. We invite all outdoor enthusiasts to make use of this national scenic trail right here in our own backyard.” says Becky Heise, Chapter Secretary. Trail improvements will be completed in cooperation with Connor Pfenning, achieving his Eagle Scout and Boy Scout Troop 560. It is estimated the youth will volunteer over 40 hours while they hike the North Country Trail from Griggs County line to the West Crossing campground along Lake Ashtabula, a 14.5 mile stretch. The impact on the community will be a better, safer, more comfortable hiking experience in the Sheyenne Valley.
City County Health District was awarded $1,200 to purchase infant car seats and weight scales. Young families come to CCHD for car seats as those who receive infant carriers from the State of North Dakota do not receive a carrier with a base. This requires the baby to be removed from the car seat and often times leads to decrease or inaccurate use. “Funding to help support a stronger car seat program will allow us to provide additional car seat checks.” Said Theresa Will, Director of CCHD. Unintentional injury is the second leading cause of death for ages 0-4 in Barnes County and the leading cause of death in ND for children over the age of 4. Car accidents are included in this data.
The purchase of 20 scales will be used for clients who are in their homes but have no way to monitor their weight. For some clients, it is extremely important to monitor their weight daily using the same scale. Having a scale available to monitor fluid weight gain, related to various heart and kidney diagnosis, will greatly improve their quality of life and can decrease exacerbation of their chronic disease.
