MAYVILLE, N.D. (vcsuvikings.com) – The Valley City State University baseball team hit four home runs Monday afternoon, powering its way to an 8-4 win at Mayville State University.
JT Reed singled to lead off the first inning, and David Demeter followed with a two-run home run as VCSU never trailed in the game. The Vikings were in command throughout the day, eventually leading 7-1 before Mayville State tacked on some late runs.
Valley City State is now 1-1 this fall season. Mayville State drops to 2-1.
Six of VCSU’s eight runs were scored on home runs. Chase Feller went deep in the fourth inning for VCSU, hitting a two-out, two-run home run that extended VCSU’s lead to 4-0. The Vikings added two more runs in the fifth inning on a Mayville error, opening up a 6-1 lead. Jayden Shipman and Gage Gellner tacked on solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings for VCSU.
Phillip Almanza started on the mound for VCSU and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. William Hlady also pitched well for the Vikings, going 3 2/3 innings in relief. Hlady struck out five and gave up three hits and an unearned run.
VCSU scored its eight runs on 10 hits. Reed and Shipman each collected two hits, while Gellner was 1-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs.
