Carrington, N.D. (NewsDakota.com)—-The Carrington Cardinal football team ran for 249 yards and controlled the time of possession to knock off the Harvey-Wells County (HWC) Hornets 24-6. The Cardinal’s were very balanced in the rushing attack led by senior Ethan Buskness’ 18 carries for 72 yards. Junior quarterback Lucas Hendrickson added 65 yards on 16 carries and junior running back Michael Clifton added 59 yards on 15 attempts including a 3 yard TD run midway through the second quarter giving Carrington a 16-0 lead. Hudson Topp added 9 carries for 47 yards and 2 TD runs (14 yards and 7 yards).
Topp scored from 14 yards out with 38 seconds remaining in the first quarter and Hendrickson added the 2 point conversion with a successful run giving the Cards an 8-0 lead. After Clifton’s score and another 2 point run from Hendrickson with 6:42 left in the first half it appeared that the Cards would take a 16-0 lead into halftime. The Hornets took advantage of a short field after forcing the Cards to punt deep in their territory and stopping the clock using up all 3 of there timeouts. Starting at the Carrington 40 yard line with 1:28 left in the half backup quarterback Madden Thorson accounted for all 40 Hornet yards, 7 yard pass to Jaxon Fike and rushing for 33 yards including a 4 yard TD run with just 3 seconds remaining in the half to trail 16-6 .
The Cardinal’s first possession of the second half was a big blow to the Hornets going 74 yards and using up 6:02 of the game clock scoring on a Hudson Topp 7 yard run with 5:58 in the quarter. Clifton added a 2 point run giving Carrington a 24-6 lead. The Hornets quickly moved the ball down the field on there first possession and were deep in Cardinal territory when Thorson was intercepted by Cardinal defensive back Drew Schroeder on a ball tipped into the air in the back of the endzone.
Neither team made much of a threat to score after the third quarter giving Carrington a 24-6 win. The Cardinals finished with 268 total yards of offense, 249 on the ground and Hendrickson completed 2 of 3 passes for 19 yards. The Hornets had 180 total yards, Thorson ran for 99 yards on 16 carries and was 5-13 passing for 45 yards and the 1 interception. HWC drops to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 2 play and Carrington improves to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 2 play.
