Nitrogen Smart is in its fifth year offering farmers the latest in nutrient management know-how designed to help farmers improve their nitrogen use efficiency—a benefit for the environment and on-farm economics. With in-person courses in question due to the COVID-19 pandemic, farmers still have an opportunity to take the course online.
The content in the online course is identical to the in-person course (both are available at no cost). First the participants are asked a few questions about their operation to tailor the content for their needs, followed by a fundamental course focusing on sources of nitrogen, how it behaves in the soil, how to reduce loss and practices that refine nutrient management.
Extension Educator Brad Carlson, who leads the Nitrogen Smart Program, said the goal of the online seminar is to provide the information to farmers so they can make their own decision about what is right for their operation.
“We have always stressed that farmers do not participate in Nitrogen Smart to have someone tell them what to do,” Carlson said. “We are not going to preach that one size fits all, rather we are going to talk about how one size does not fit all and provide you the information so you can better understand your own circumstances.”
New this year, farmers who complete the online Nitrogen Smart course gain access to a suite of materials they can come back and reference as they adjust their nutrient management practices. Videos, presentations and reference materials from the course are all available to Nitrogen Smart graduates.
