JAMESTOWN, N.D. (Evin Casey/NewsDakota.com) – The wild ride that was the 2020 Valley City Saints amateur baseball season came to an end at Jack Brown Stadium in Jamestown Saturday afternoon as the Saints were held to just two hits in a 4-1 loss to the Jamestown Hounds.
The Hounds would strike first in the top of the 2nd off Saints starter Marcus Niemann. Nolan Kratz led the inning off by getting hit by the pitch, then advanced to second on an errant pick-off throw by Niemann. A Robbie Rocamora walk and a wild pitch by Niemann had Hounds runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Danny Fischer then slapped a ground ball to Saints third baseman Nate Rodriguez, who caught Kratz too far off 3rd base and was out trying to score. After a Connor Mormon walk loaded the bases, Jake Stilwell’s sacrifice fly made it 1-0 Hounds.
The Saints bats could not get anything going off Hounds starter Dylan Dudley as Dudley only gave up one hit in 5 innings of work. Will Hlady came in relief of Niemann to start the 3rd and kept the Hounds at bay for 2 2/3 before being relieved by Brady Engebretson in the 5th after giving up a 2-out single to Ben Pedigo. Engebretson escaped trouble despite Brady Anderson singling to right but Shaun Kourajian’s throw home nailed Pedigo at home and the score remained 1-0.
The Hounds would capitalize on some Saints mistakes in the 6th and made them pay for it. Justin Connell led off the inning with a single. An Engebretson balk moved Connell to second. Kratz then advanced on a fielding error by 1st baseman Drew Nixon. Rocamora drove Connell in from 3rd on a fielder’s choice. Engebretson then hit Fischer by a pitch, then a wild pitch put both Rocamora and Fisher into scoring position where Mormon singled in Rocamora. Stilwell’s second RBI of the game on a dribbler allowed Fischer to score to make it 4-0 Hounds.
The Saints got some offense going in their half of the 6th off reliever Jake Stilwell. Gideon Ellis walked, but was caught stealing second. But the Saints got a runner to second for the first time since the first inning after Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Jesse Johnson walked. But a Seth Soderholm strikeout ended the Saints threat.
The Saints didn’t go home without some fireworks. Evin Casey replaced Brady Engebretson in the 7th. After Casey’s 1-2 pitch to Pedigo was called a ball, the home plate umpire ejected center fielder JT Reed from behind the plate. Coach Ryan Torbenson was also ejected from the game as well.
That fired up the Saints as they avoided being shut out on a Ross Powell fielders choice in which Matthew Suda scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. But that was all they could muster and with that the 2020 season was over.
Marcus Niemann and Matthew Suda had the hits for the Saints. Niemann took the loss on the mound. He did not allow a hit in two innings of work but he walked two, hit a batter and had an error in the first inning to aid Jamestown in scoring the first run of the game. Three other pitchers, Will Hardy, Blake Engebretson and Evin Casey allowed just four hits and one earned run over the last five innings.
The Valley City Saints finished their season with a 10-12-1 record. Despite things not going the way they planned with a state title, the Saints made baseball fun during these tough times. It wouldn’t have been a season without the efforts of players, coaches, businesses, and the Valley City baseball community. The Saints would like to thank their sponsors: J&S Marketing, Valley City Eagles Aerie 2192, Bridge City Ordinance, and Boomers Corner Keg.
The Saints can’t wait for the 2021 season to begin!
