CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Residents of Carrington were alerted Monday after a funnel cloud was spotted just north of town.
Foster County Emergency Manager Aaron Devereaux reports that after 911 calls came in around 2 PM, they activated the tornado sirens.
Devereaux added that in discussions with other officials, it was determined that the funnel cloud did not touchdown anywhere in the county.
He pointed out that this incident is a good reminder that if residents see a funnel cloud or damage from storms to reach out to call 911.
Devereaux says he’s been asked why there was no weather alert sounded. He says this is because the National Weather Service cannot see systems under 7,000 feet on their radar.
Foster County Sheriff Justin Johnson added that in talks with the National Weather Service, it’s very rare these types of funnel clouds touchdown.
“And if they do, they cause very minor damage, if any at all,” Sheriff Johnson said. “With this being said, if you see one please call 911 to report it and seek shelter.”
Because severe weather can happen in an instant, Devereaux says being prepared is key.
