LaMOURE, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Valley City Kings got great pitching in game one and great hitting in game two to get the sweep of a doubleheader over LaMoure in Babe Ruth baseball Thursday in LaMoure.
GAME #1 – Valley City 3, LaMoure 0
Max Mehus and Ethan Miller combined on a two-hitter in the opener.Mehus allowed both hits in 5 2/3 innings of work. He walked three and struck out seven to get the win. Miller pitched the last 1 1/3 with on strike out for the save.
Offensively, the Kings scored a run in the first when Isaiah Schuldheisz scored Mehus on a single. Mehus walked, stole second then went to third on a Espen Kunze’s ground out. Schuldheisz hit a line drive to left to score Mehus to make it 1-0.
The score stayed that way until the top of the seventh when the Kings got some insurance. With two out, Miller singled right, Carver Pederson, who came in to pinch run, moved to third. Gavin Gerhardt singled to left to score Pederson. Broden Muske was hit by a pitch to load then bases then Zachary Sykora was hit by a pitch to score Miller to make it 3-0.
Miller, Gerhardt and Schuldheisz all had two hits for the Kings. Muske had one hit.
GAME 2: Valley City 8, LaMoure 4
In game 2, the Kings scored four runs in the third and fourth innings and picked up an 8-4 win. Valley City had 10 hits in five inning.
In the third inning, with LaMoure up 2-0, the first four batters reached on a walk and three singles. The third single, by Zachary Sykora, drove in Broden Muske and Carver Pederson to tie the game at 2. Ryan Fischer hit into a fielder’s choice to score Espen Kunze to give the Kings the lead at 3-2. Casey Kruger singled in Fischer later in the inning to make it 4-2.
The Kings added four more in the fourth. Broden Muske led off the inning with an inside-the park-home run to give the Kings a 5-2 lead. That run would turn out to be the game winner. Carver Pederson and Espen Kunze singled then Zachary Sykora scored Pederson with a sacrifice fly. One batter later, Christian Beutler doubled in Kunze to make it 7-2. Isaiah Schuldheisz reached on an error which scored Ryan Fischer for the 8-2 lead.
Beutler had three hits and an rbi to lead the offense. Pederson and Muske had two hits each. Kunze, Sykora and Kruger had two hits each. Sykora drove in three runs.
With the wins, the Kings are now 11-1 and have won five games in a row.
