LIDGERWOOD, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For the second time in the last week, Oakes knocked off Fairmont/Hankinson/Lidgerwood (FHL) and are now 5-0 on the season.
Oakes used a strong 4th inning to create some separation en route to their 6-2 victory Thursday night. The 4th inning produced five runs and saw 11 batters make a plate appearance. The first four reached safely, then back-to-back fielders choices drove in two runs with Steele Hansen and Connor Schall picking up RBI’s. Mix in an error and cap the inning off with an RBI single off the bat of David Schmitz, and Oakes lead 6-0.
That was more than enough for starting pitcher Garret Meehl. In his first start, third overall appearance, Meehl allowed one earned run, surrendered just three hits, walked four and struck out four as he picked up his second win of the year. Both of his wins came against FHL. Meehl also scored a run and went 2-4 at the plate.
Pitching has carried Oakes through the first half of the season. In five games Oakes pitching has allowed a meager five runs with one shutout sandwiched in the middle.
Oakes will look to keep their robust pitching going against Enderlin Monday night at Cummings Field. Game time is slated for 6:00 and with a 5:50 pregame start time, coverage can be heard on KDDR and newsdakota.com
