OAKES, N.D. (Newsdakota.com) – The Oakes independent baseball team improved to 4-0 Tuesday night with a pair of wins over Linton/Wishek.
Here’s how each game unfolded:
Game 1: Oakes 12, Linton/Wishek 1 (F/5)
After putting up just four combined runs through their first two games, the Oakes lineup took advantage of some sporadic pitching Tuesday night to post a 12 spot in the opener. Oakes hitters drew eight walks through just five innings.
A number of hitters should be highlighted for their production in game one. Shortstop Garret Meehl went 3-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, catcher Howie Neustel added two RBI and reached base safely three times, and David Schmitz reached in all three of his plate appearances and capped his night off with a two-run double.
Plenty of run support gave a cushion on the mound for Brady McKenna. He picked up his second win by going five innings, giving up one run on just four hits and striking out nine batters. McKenna’s night wasn’t done despite pitching all five innings in game one.
Game 2: Oakes 8, Linton/Wishek 0
Through four games Linton/Wishek has been shutout three times and they fell to 0-4 Tuesday night.
This game was closer in score, but instead of using crooked innings like in game one, Oakes strung together five straight innings scoring between a single tally and two runs in each frame.
Meehl and Alex Nelson were the catalysts in game two. Each added two hits and Nelson reached all four times mixing in a pair of doubles and an RBI.
Jaidy Gebhardt was a force in both games for Oakes, too. At the plate, he racked up three hits, two doubles and two RBI, and on the mound he pitched five plus innings of scoreless baseball. Gebhardt was pulled one batter into the sixth inning for the aforementioned McKenna. After he picked up the win in the opener, McKenna closed the door for a two inning save to finish the sweep.
Oakes is now 4-0 atop the independent league’s standings and will travel to Lidgerwood to face Fairmont/Hankinson/Lidgerwood this Thursday at 6:00. Oakes defeated FHL in walk-off fashion last Thursday night.
