Wilfred “Sonny” Kunze, age 87, of Dazey, ND, died Wednesday, April 22 at Sanford Health in Fargo. A private funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dazey, ND. Public Visitation will be held on Monday, April 27th from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Mathias Funeral Home in Valley City. Interment with Military Honors will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Wilfred “Sonny” Kunze, the son of Joe B. and Helen “Lena” (Heinze) Kunze, was born March 31, 1933 in Dazey, ND. Wilfred grew up and attended rural school in the Dazey, ND area. After receiving his education, Wilfred farmed with his dad until he was drafted during the Korean War. Wilfred served is country in the US Army until he was Honorably Discharged on April 12, 1958. After his discharge, he returned to Dazey where he started his farming career. Wilfred loved to ride horse and doing farm work with a team of horses. He also was a true outdoorsman who liked to hunt and trap. Wilfred was an avid gun collector and didn’t like to miss a good auction sale. He also had a special place in his heart for his Dog “Snooker” that went everywhere with Wilfred. Wilfred continued to live and farm until his retirement when he moved into Sibley, ND.
Wilfred is survived by his siblings, Florence Pickar, Deloris Nogowski, Beatrice Fuchs and Gerald Kunze; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Wilfred was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Lavina Knight and Helen Geiger and one brother, Sylvester Kunze.
