NAPOLEON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Miss North Dakota Haley Wolfe, visited Napoleon Public School on Friday, February 28th.
She recognized two local students who were crowned in the Miss Bismarck-Mandan and Miss Mercer County joint preliminary competition on February 16. Janae Weigel, 17, was crowned Miss Bismarck’s Outstanding Teen and Charmaine Haas, 16, received the Miss Coal Country’s Outstanding Teen title.
On her statewide school tour, Wolfe is sharing her platform, #BeThe1To, a social movement that focuses on suicide prevention and awareness. Each girl participating in the 2020 preliminary competitions created their own social impact platforms. Both Weigel’s and Haas’ own messages echo Wolfe’s, concerned about mental health and suicide in their communities.
Janae Weigel, 17, lives in Kintyre. She is active in FFA, student council, multiple sports and on the Honor Roll. In her year as Miss Bismarck’s Outstanding Teen, Weigel is hoping to draw attention to her platform, “MIND your health: education for mental health,” promoting the creation of school curriculum about brain development, mental health and mental illness.
Charmaine Haas, 16, is from Napoleon. She is active in several sports including archery, and also DECA and FFA. As Miss Coal Country’s Outstanding Teen, Haas is promoting her platform, “Let’s Live Longer and End Teen Suicide.” She supports the creation of teen-safe social media support groups for struggling teens, to offer them hope outside of suicide.
Both 2020 titleholders receive a $200 scholarship and move on to compete in Williston in June, 2020, for Miss North Dakota’s Outstanding Teen.
