BISMARCK, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A week ago the Jamestown Blue Jays boys hockey team scored a season high 7 goals in a win against Bismarck.

On Thursday, Bismarck got the last laugh with a 4-2 win in the first round of the 2020 West Region Hockey Tournament.

Six minutes into the game Bismarck committed two penalties leading to two failed Jamestown power plays. It would be a familiar story over the next 27 minutes. Later in the period, Bismarck So. Remington Richardson scored on a breakaway goal to give the Demons a 1-0 lead at the end of one.

Period two came around and was jam packed with penalties. The two teams combined for seven penalties, five of those occurred within six minutes of each other. At the 9:52 mark, Jamestown Sr. Tommy Falk was called for a two minute tripping. Less than 25 seconds later Bismarck Jr. Nicholas Mortenson made it a 2-0 lead.

The woes continued for Jamestown later in the second period. So. Joe Cummings got called for a tripping penalty sending Bismarck on the power play again.

Power plays weren’t working so Jamestown scored a man down.

Jamestown So. Hunter Nelson etched the Jays onto the scoreboard and trailed 2-1 going to the 3rd period.

Six minutes into the third period Mark Horner padded the Bismarck lead to two goals.

The Bismarck win didn’t come without hiccups though. Bismarck Sr. Bailey Schneider was called for a 5:00 major for elbowing, and six seconds into the power play, Jamestown finally broke the power play barrier when Jr. Jacoby Nold cut the deficit to one goal again.

Jamestown had a number of chances to knot the game up over the next five minutes but failed to so. Bismarck Sr. Joe Heinert notched an empty netter to ice the Bismarck 4-2 win.

Bismarck moves on to play number one seed Mandan Friday at 5:00. Jamestown falls into an elimination game to play eight seed Bottineau/Rugby at 11am tomorrow.
