JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – LaMoure-Litchville/Marion’s girls basketball team will represent District 5 as the number one seed in next week’s Region 3 Tournament. LLM will be joined by Carrington, Oakes and Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier.
Here’s how the three games unfolded Monday night at the Jamestown Civic Center.
Oakes 72, Midkota 53 (Region Qualifier)
The Oakes Tornadoes turned in a 2-1 district tournament performance with their leading scorer Nicole Schmitz playing in just one game and scoring zero points.
Monday night, Oakes defeated Midkota by almost 20 points to advance to another region tournament.
Coming off a lackluster offensive performance in which Oakes scored single digit point totals in two quarters against LLM, Oakes came out firing on all cylinders and scored 40 in the first half. Pushed by Jr. Sadie Hansen’s 27 point performance, Oakes shot 56 percent from the field, 33 percent from long range and 83 percent at the line.
Hansen would have set a tournament high for points if not for Midkota’s Brenna Anderson. The Sr. guard poured in 29 points on 10 of 16 shooting to set a tournament high.
Oakes finishes as the 3 seed out of District 5 and will face Medina-Pingree/Buchanan in the Region 3 Tournament.
Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier 45, Ellendale 31 (Region Qualifier)
EKM’s defense came to play forcing Ellendale to shoot just 28.6 percent in both halves en route to the 14 point victory.
Despite a poor shooting performance, Ellendale hung around into the 4th quarter. With roughly six minutes to go Ellendale cut the deficit to six points thanks to Fr. Sara Young and Sr. Calli Hauck combining for three second half treys. It was too little too late as EKM would pull away over the final three minutes to secure the double digits victory.
The Rebels attacked Ellendale with a balanced approach. No scorers finished with 10 points or more, but four players scored between six and nine points. Jocelynn Madcke was the leading scorer for EKM in the second straight game with 9 points.
Ellendale’s leading scorer was Hauck with 11.
EKM will take on the one seed Kidder County from District 6 in the Region 3 Tournament.
LaMoure-Litchville/Marion 56, Carrington 31
LLM’s plastering defense shut down a good Carrington Cardinals team to win their second consecutive District 5 Championship.
After leading by one after the first quarter, Carrington was shut down and held to single digits in the last three quarters. The Cardinals shot 24 percent in the second half and just 29 percent for the game. 31 points is a new season low for the Cardinals, while the loss snapped a 12 game winning streak dating back to January 12th.
A large reason why Carrington struggled so much was the defense from LLM Sr. Ellie Holen. The District 5 Senior Athlete of the Year blanketed Carrington’s leading scorer Kiera Eli and held her to just one point. Holen also produced big numbers on offense scoring 22 points.
For the second consecutive year, LLM upsets the number one seed Carrington as the lower seed and will represent District 5 as the one see. LLM will greet Strasburg/Zeeland and Carrington will match up with Linton/HMB.
After the games, the All District 5 team, Senior Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year and Athletic Director of the Year were handed out at the Jamestown Civic Center.
