CASSELTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – In a 57-51 loss at Central Cass (15-4), Oakes Sr. Nicole Schmitz became the all-time scoring leader at Oakes High School.

Schmitz broke Nicole Warren’s record of 1,459 points in the first quarter with a layup.

“The physicality, the athleticism and everything that kind of goes with that, you just can’t teach,” Oakes Head Coach Brennan Hack on Schmitz.

The scoring record was celebrated after the game because Oakes (15-5) had a tough match up with Central Cass in front of them. In the closest and most competitive game of the season, Oakes and Central Cass exchanged leads throughout the game, but the Squirrels closed out the 4th quarter on a run and pulled away by six. Hack said both teams played good games but two areas hampered the Tornadoes last night.

“Turnovers. We just had too many last night. And the other one was free throws. If we even converted 70 percent of our free throws I think we would have won by three or four,” said Hack.

Oakes missed their first five free throws of the game last night.

On the bright side, Oakes had four players with double digit scoring totals. Schmitz finished with 14, Sadie Hansen recorded 13, Jaida Seyer had 12 and CeCe Hoelscher constructed a season high 10 point performance.

The quartet was not enough to beat Central Cass and Decontee Smith. Off the bench Smith poured in 22 points with a couple of three pointers in the victory.

Central Cass extends its winning streak to nine while the Tornadoes drop their first game in the last five contests.

District 5 tournament play is up next for the Oakes girls. This Friday night at 7:30 kicks off postseason play as Oakes takes on Barnes County North.
