THOMPSON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com, submitted by Kyle Hewitt) Hannah Hagel and Kiera Eli combined to score 42 of Carrington’s 53 points as the 7th rated Cardinal’s defeated 10th ranked Thompson 53-47. Hagel, 5’10 junior scored 20 of her game high 22 points in the second half. Hagel shot 16 of the Cards 20 free throws and connected on 12 including several front ends of the bonus to help seal the win late in the fourth quarter. Eli, 5’7 senior had another good night shooting, drilling 6 more triples accounting for 18 of her 20 points. Eli got things going early for the Cardinal offense connecting on 3 first quarter triples. Marah Schmitz added 7 points for the Cards. The Tommies were paced by MacKenzie Hughes with 18 points. Kaia Sorby and Lauren Cunningham added 9 points each. The Tommies dropped to 15-4 overall, all 4 losses have been to teams in the top ten including top ranked Kindred, second ranked Langdon-EM, fourth ranked Grafton, and now 7th rated Carrington.
The Cardinals improved to 17-2 and will enter post season play starting this weekend at the Jamestown Civic Center as the top seed in the District 5 tournament. Carrington will get a first round bye and play Saturday night around 6:00 P.M. versus the winner of Midkota and EKM. Entire District 5 tournament will be aired on Q101 and www.newsdakota.com
