CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com, submitted by Kyle Hewitt) The Carrington Cardinals wrestling team entered the Region 2 tournament as the number 2 seed, but when action finished Saturday afternoon at Carrington High School the Cardinals were the top team. Carrington defeated Harvey-Wells County 73-6 in the opening round and followed that up with a convincing 60-21 win over the number 3 seed Central Cass in the semifinals.
The Cardinals would run into the top seeded Pembina County North (PCN) Grizzlies in the title match. The Grizzlies dismantled Mayville-Portland-CG 78-3 in the opening round. PCN defeated Grafton 75-3 in the semifinals setting up the title match. The Cards would avenge an early season loss to the Grizzlies (42-36), a mid December loss in Carrington. The Cards trailed 21-18 after the 285 pound match and then went on to win 5 straight matches, 2 by pin, 2 by technical fall, and a decision to put the match out of reach leading 43-21 with just 2 matches to go. PCN would take those last 2 matches to narrow the score to 43-32. The Cardinals will enter the state tourney with a 9-5 dual record and PCN will also compete at the state tourney entering with a 15-5 overall record.
PCN had to wrestle Central Cass in a challenge match for the 2nd place spot and had no problem defeating the Squirrels 63-16.
