OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – In her final home game as an Oakes Tornado, Nicole Schmitz posted a season high 28 points in Oakes’ (13-5) 65-57 victory over Linton/HMB (13-6).
Schmitz produced efficient numbers both from the field and at the free throw line. A perfect 10-10 at the line and nine made field goals, and all but one coming inside the paint, boosted Schmitz to the season high in points.
The rest of the Oakes’ offense came to play as well. They posted quarters totaling 16, 18, 12 and 19 points, and if not for a scintillating night from Linton’s JayCee Richter and Teegan Scherr the game may have been out of reach.
Oakes led by 14 at the break and pushed to lead to as much as 19 points in the 3rd quarter, but a prolific 25 point 4th quarter for Linton/HMB dwindled to lead to eight but nothing smaller. Scherr caught fire in the 4th quarter hitting a pair of threes to finish with 21 points. Richter was the facilitator with 22 points and was brilliant in the passing game as well.
The duo of Richter and Scherr was not enough as Oakes defeated Linton/HMB for the second consecutive game dating back to last year’s regional overtime win.
Oakes’ Sadie Hansen finished with 17 points, Jaida Seyer had 6 and Claire Wagner and Shayla Novak contributed five each.
Just two regular season games remain for Oakes. A tough road test awaits the Tornadoes Monday with a trip to Central Cass (12-4). The action can be heard on KDDR and newsdakota.com.
