OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Fresh off Christmas break, both the Oakes girls and boys basketball teams notched victories over Barnes County North behind strong shooting performances.
Girls: Oakes 74, BCN 14
Oakes was in control from the opening tip. Four seconds into the ballgame Oakes scored and went on a 26-2 run to begin the ballgame. Oakes almost had more players score than Barnes County North had total points.
Nicole Schmitz was the leading scorer with 14 points, Emma Muggli constructed a 12 point performance off the bench, and Laikyn Roney scored 9 points.
The girls will play Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier at home on Tuesday.
Boys: Oakes 65, BCN 53
The last time out featured Oakes shooting just 25% in a loss against Northern Cass. Friday night saw the Tornadoes exercise those offensive frustrations in a twelve point win over BCN to complete a sweep of the night.
Oakes stormed out of the gate scoring 26 first quarter points behind Garret Meehl’s 9 points. Meehl finished his night with a game high 29 points.
The offensive onslaught built up a lead as big as 15 at one point before BCN clawed its way within a two possession in the 4th quarter.
During the lead being built, Ashton Biesterfeld was on his way to a real strong game before picking up his 3rd foul late in the 2nd quarter. Head Coach Nolen Peterson said key players getting into foul trouble hamstrings his team, but it wasn’t enough.
Meehl was the leading scorer, Steele Hansen had 19 and Biesterfeld poured in 9 with a number of steals as well.
Oakes travels to Midkota Monday night for another District game.
