JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – The Jamestown Police Department has issued a reminder to drivers to adjust their driving to the conditions.
“We often hear people say at accident scenes ‘I was driving the speed limit’,” the Department states. “However, we just wanted to point out that we live in North Dakota and the weather is often changing along with the road surfaces.”
A current system is causing deteriorating conditions in the region, prompting the department to remind drivers to adjust their speeds and driving to the elements.
“Just because the speed limit is posted, it doesn’t mean you should drive that fast. In conditions like today with low visibility, snow covered icy roads, drivers must use caution and drive at a reasonable speed based on the conditions.”
According to State and City law, “no person may drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing” (ND Century Code 39-01-01 or Jamestown City Code 21-06-02- Basic Rule).
In addition, “any person driving a vehicle upon a street shall drive the vehicle in a careful and prudent manner, having due regard to traffic, surface, and width of the street and other conditions then existing, and shall give such warnings as are reasonably necessary for safe operation under the circumstances. No person may drive any vehicle upon a street in a manner to endanger the life, limb, or property of any person.” (ND Century Code 39-09-01.1 or Jamestown City Code 21-06-02.1- Care Required).
“If you don’t have to drive, please don’t. However, if you must, please use extreme caution, drive slow and turn on your headlights.”
