YANKTON, S.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Facing a 23-point deficit after 30 minutes, the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team erupted for 31 points in the final quarter, but their rally came up just short in a 55-53 loss to Mount Marty College.
Jamestown (6-3 overall, 2-2 Great Plains Athletic Conference) will play an exhibition game at Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday before returning to GPAC action on Wednesday, December 4 against Dordt (Iowa).
UJ shot just 6-for-27 from the field in the first half and trailed 31-17 at the half.
The Jimmies’ shooting woes continued in the third quarter as they connected on just one of 15 shots for a total of five points in the frame.
In the fourth quarter, Jamestown shot 8-for-18, including three three-pointers, and went 12-for-17 at the free throw line to outscore the Lancers 31-10.
Hannah DeMars (FR/Grand Rapids, MN) converted a three-point play with 37 seconds left to make it a single-possession game at 50-48. She later got the Jimmies within a point 51-50, but as UJ was forced to foul to save clock time, Karlee McKinney and Hannah Williams sank both of their free throws to put the game away.
Kia Tower (FR/Bigfork, MN)’s three-point shot went in at the buzzer to make it a two-point game.
DeMars led UJ scorers with 12 points and added four assists. She was joined in double figures by Olivia Anderson (SR/Edgeley, ND) with 10. Grace Benz (SO/Steele, ND) finished with nine points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Tower and Paige Schmidt (SR/Tappen, ND) recorded three steals each.
McKinney led Mount Marty (5-3, 1-3 GPAC) with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
