FARGO, N.D. – (NewsDakota.com) – Oakes began the 2019 Class B Volleyball Tournament with a sweep of Stanley (25-14, 25-15, 25-20).
It was a sloppy match on both sides of the net as Stanley recorded just 13 kills as team and both teams were riddled with errors, but Oakes will gladly take the quick victory.
The Tornadoes used a 7-0 run to open the first set up and win by 11 points, the largest difference of the night.
Though there were service errors, Oakes made up for it by recording nine team aces. Allison Jepson recorded three during the 7-0 run in the first set while Nicole Schmitz and Abby Cox both recorded two aces.
Oakes took the second set in similar fashion to the first. Stanley hung around through the first 20 points, but Oakes pulled away late to take a 2-0 lead.
The third set was the closest of the night. Stanley hovered near Oakes for basically the entire game but Schmitz recorded her match high 17th kill to put the match away and advance to the semifinals.
Oakes setter Sadie Hansen recorded a match high 25 assists and added six kills, an ace and four digs to complete a productive, well-rounded night. Emma Muggli tallied seven kills, Shayla Novak had five and Jaida Seyer had a team high 11 digs.
Jossi Meyer led Stanley with seven kills.
Oakes will get the winner of Oak Grove and Thompson at 7:00 Saturday night. The match can be found on KDDR.
