VALLEY CITY, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – A Mesa, Arizona man was sentenced to serve 10 years in prison on two felony counts of attempted murder and one count of robbery stemming from a November 21st 2018 shooting in Valley City.
Cornelious Edward Johnson entered guilty pleas to all three felony counts during a change of plea hearing on September 5th.
During the sentence hearing on October 24th, Judge Jay Schmitz gave Johnson credit for 267 days already served, waived all fees and issued no probation order once he’s released from prison.
Judge Schmitz asked Johnson, why would you risk a promising life ahead of you over a small amount of marijuana and more than $300 in cash? Johnson answered, “There’s no explanation for the decision I made that night, but it wasn’t over marijuana.” He added, “I’m going to use this time to become a better man.”
Meanwhile, the victim, Trey William Kamstra who was shot once in the upper body continues to make a full recovery. Dalon Maurice Allen was not injured after Johnson shot at him and missed during the shooting.
Johnson fled North Dakota after the shooting. On January 30th of 2019 U.S. Marshals arrested him in Maricopa County Arizona.
