JAMESTOWN, N.D. (JimmieAthletics.com) – Mason Walters (FR/Jamestown, ND) scored 17 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, helping the University of Jamestown men’s basketball team to a 90-78 win over Mayville State (N.D.) University Tuesday night at Harold Newman Arena.
The Comets led by as many as eight points (24-16) with 10:26 in the first half, but a 16-5 run over the next 3:58 gave Jamestown a 32-29 advantage. UJ (2-1) went ahead 41-32 following a Brock Schrom (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) basket at the 3:20 mark, and following a timeout by the Comets, soon saw their lead cut to 43-40 at the half.
Mayville State’s Iker Cruz made the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to 43-42. Over the next 2:48, UJ outscored the Comets 14-2 to open up a 13-point lead. A mini-run by Mayville State got them within nine points, but Jamestown would eventually boost their lead to as many as 19 points.
Walters made 7-of-9 field goal attempts in the second half as the Jimmies focused on getting the ball inside. Brady Birch (JR/Melrose, MN) (2-for-2) and Brock Schrom (2-for-3) also helped UJ finish 14-for-22 inside the three-point line in the final 20 minutes.
Joining Walters in double figures were Schrom, Jack Talley (JR/Sioux Falls, SD), and Isaiah Dobson (SR/Stillwater, MN), who all scored 14; and Jack Frazier (SR/Salem, OR) with 10. Talley, Schrom, Dobson, and Walters all finished with seven rebounds each. Frazier dished out six assists with Dobson and Talley recording five assists each.
Rene Melendez had 20 points to lead Mayville State (0-1). Max Cooper added 19 points and seven rebounds. Latrelle Franklin chipped in with nine points and seven assists.
Jamestown turned the ball over just 11 times compared to Mayville State’s 17, holding a 22-12 edge in points off turnovers. UJ’s bench also outscored the Comets’ by a 35-21 margin.
