OAKES, N.D. (Newsdakota.com) – On the final day of the regular season, the Oakes Tornadoes defeated the Ellendale/Edgeley/Kulm Thunder 36-17.
Oakes dawned the camouflage uniforms on Military Appreciation day as Oakes improved to 7-1.
A fast start propelled Oakes to the victory Saturday Afternoon from Cummings Field. Oakes scored over a minute into the ball game on a 42 yard scamper by quarterback Garret Meehl.
A big run by EEK’s starting RB Kodie Slivoskey set up the Thunder to get on the scoreboard with a field goal to make it 8-3.
Oakes’ fast start continued on its second drive which resulted in a methodical march down the field resulting in a five yard touchdown pass from Meehl to running back Logan Sell to make it 15-3.
Both offenses stalled out over the next ten minutes with a couple failed fourth down conversions. EEK struck next over halfway through the second quarter to cut the deficit to one score, but Oakes widened the gap before the half. Sell added his second touchdown of the game after busting a long run to set up the Oakes offense inside the five. It was Sell’s 15th rushing touchdown of the season and it made it 23-9 at halftime.
Oakes added on two more touchdowns in the third quarter to complete a 21-0 scoring run. Joey Heim returned an interception for a touchdown. The pick-6 was the 5th defensive score of the year and the second for Heim.
Meehl would tack on his second touchdown pass of the day by finding David Schmitz from 25 yards out to make it 36-9.
EEK added a score later in the fourth quarter to make it a 36-17 final.
Next up for Oakes is the first round of the playoffs Saturday the 26th at home against Rugby. Kickoff time will be announced later.
