JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) –  The City of Jamestown needs you!  Mayor Dwaine Heinrich says the city has “an urgent need” for volunteers to help with sandbagging efforts.

Heinrich says the city has a need for up to 200 volunteers to help with filling and placing of sandbags in the areas that are going to be protected.  Heinrich says there are 2 low spots in the banks one behind Taco Bell, the other behind Dairy Queen that are main focal points for the flood protection efforts.

Heinrich says that a weather system predicted for late Sunday could bring an additional one quarter to one and one half inches of rainfall.  Heinrich says it is urgent that the bags be in place before that happens.  The goal is to get the water flowing at a higher rate as soon as possible, so that the James River can be down to the level dictated by the Corps of Engineers before freeze-up.

Heinrich asks for businesses to allow employees to be released from work this afternoon or tomorrow to help with the sandbagging efforts if possible.  Heinrich says there is an incentive.  If you volunteer for 2 hours, you receive a free wristband to attend “Rocktober Fest” concert event at the Civic Center on Saturday night.

Heinrich says,”The cold hard truth is we need you, and we need you now.”

Volunteers are asked to report to the west side parking lot of the Jamestown Civic Center.
