CARRINGTON, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – In a matchup of two of the top teams in the region, Carrington outlasted Oakes in five sets (26-24, 23-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-6).

Carrington pulled ahead late in the first set by scoring five of the last six sets to win 26-24 and jump out to an early 1-0 lead.

But Oakes would respond by winning the second and third sets. Oakes scored the first seven points of the 2nd set and would score five in a row later in the set. Carrington put together a surge of six in a row to apply some pressure on Oakes, but the Tornadoes hung on and won 25-23. Then Oakes handled the fourth set and won 25-22, but with a 2-1 lead Carrington would respond and took the fourth set and the fifth sets.

Leading attacker for Oakes was Nicole Schmitz who finished with 19 kills while Shayla Novak had eight and Emma Muggli had five kills.

Claire Wagner and Abby Cox both had three aces as well.

Oakes’ next time out will be Tuesday at home against Medina-Pingree/Buchanan.
