VALLEY CITY, N.D. (What In The World Is Going On?) – The documentary, Climate Change-The World Set Free, will be shown at the Valley City State University Science Center Auditorium Thursday, October 17th at 7 pm presented by What In The World Is Going On?

This 40 minute video with Neil DeGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist and science communicator, originally aired on the National Geographic Channel. The event is free and open to the public.

The documentary explores global warming, humanity’s effect on the Earth’s atmosphere, and what we can do to mitigate it, including a look at alternative energy technologies. It explores the nature of the greenhouse effect, and that levels of carbon dioxide have been increasing since the start of the 20th Century.

Evidence has shown the warming of the earth to be from mankind’s consumption of oil, coal, and gas. The increase in carbon dioxide has led to an increase in temperatures, in turn leading to the melting of the polar ice caps and thawing-out of the permafrost which in turn increases carbon dioxide levels.

The presentation will be moderated by Dr. Lauren Dennhardt, an assistant professor in the Wildlife and Fisheries major at Valley City State University. She currently teaches Rangeland Management, Botany, Restoration Ecology and Zoology. She earned her PhD at NDSU.

This is the first in a series of presentations about climate change. On Thursday, November 7th at 7 pm Phyllis Johnson, scientist and researcher recently retired from both UND and the USDA, will present Climate Change and Our Food Supply.

What In The World Is Going On? Is a campus/community organization dedicated to stimulating discussion about current topics of interest in our state and nation. For further information call 701-845-7321.
