OAKES, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Two elite offenses were on display Friday night at Cummings Field for Oakes’ homecoming.
It may have been Oakes’ homecoming but Lisbon played the role of spoilers as they down the Tornadoes 48-38.
The first quarter was electric. Both teams posted 20 points in the first quarter alone. The scoring started after the opening kickoff set up Oakes on the Lisbon side of midfield. Senior back Logan Sell would score from three yards out to give Oakes a 7-0 lead.
That was just the beginning of an intense fireworks display.
Lisbon would answer with their own running back Jordan Sours who had 11 rushing touchdowns coming into the night and he would add on. His first came from 19 yards out and with a two-point conversion Lisbon led 8-6. Oakes responded on the ensuing kickoff when David Schmitz returned one 78 yards to give Oakes the lead 13-8.
Lisbon responded with two straight touchdowns. A two yard touchdown run from QB Hunter Schultz, and following an interception, Sours added his second TD of the night. Both TD’s had failed 2-point conversions and Lisbon went on top 20-13.
How did Oakes respond? With a touchdown of course. Logan Sell rushed one in from 19 yards out after a 4th down conversion to tie the game at 20. And that was the first twelve minutes.
The 2nd quarter settled the offenses down. Both teams exchanged touchdowns and failed two point conversions to make it 26-26 headed into halftime.
The 3rd quarter stymied the offenses. Both teams were scoreless in a field position battle. Early in the 4th quarter, Lisbon reclaimed the lead on a 9 yard touchdown run from Schultz (his 2nd of the game.) This time the Broncos succeeded on a two point conversion, and it meant a lot after Oakes scored on its next possession to pull within two. A failed two point conversion had Oakes down 34-32.
Lisbon pulled away again with the third rushing touchdown of the game by Schultz on the next drive. A failed two point conversion made it 40-32 and still a one possession game.
Oakes responded, again, with a Logan Sell touchdown but, again, failed a two point conversion.
The chaotic game was nearing its end and Oakes’ defense needed a stop to give themselves a chance. Jordan Sours had other plans as he sprinted past the defense for a 38 yard TD run with a two point conversion to make it a ten point game.
Oakes’ offense was turned away on a 4th down and Lisbon iced the game away.
Oakes drops to 4-1, Lisbon advances to 5-0.
Next time out for Oakes will be at home next Friday against Oak Grove.
