Coach Nielson’s thoughts:
Thanks to the Valley City Tennis Association for our annual Hi-Liner BBQ against Fargo South. Both teams were very appreciative and made it a very friendly atmosphere.
Against Fargo South, we switched up the doubles line-up. Blake and Zeltinger competed very well against the reigning doubles state champions while Austin and Collin won at #2 doubles. At #3 doubles, we had the team of Derek and Kai for the first time this year. These two usually play only one varsity match in an EDC dual, but they played both today to gain valuable experience in playing multiple matches back-to-back as that is how regionals will be.
In singles, Fargo South is very tough with having their top five players all seniors. Kai at six singles had the longest match of the day. He was really thinking on the court. He lost the first set and realized that he needed to pick on his opponents backhand, be more consistent, and come to the net when the opportunity presents itself. He cruised in the second set. In the third set, Aiden upped his game and both players played with passion. Neither ever gave up on a point. Both reset points often. Both stayed consistent. Both came to the net when they had the opportunity. It was a battle with many rallies going twenty strokes or more. Kai eventually came out on top by saving one match point. Great fight Kai!
Hi-Liners faced a tough Fargo South JV and played very well losing some close matches. Alex Rogelstad is making huge steps and showing he can play against tougher competition. Emmett Olson and Miles Taylor continue to improve and show they will be part of the future success for this boys team. Jayden Johnson is also making huge strides, he had to fight through some elbow pain but by finished strong and will also be a big part of this team in years to come. Yu Zheng has been a pleasant surprise this year as well, playing better and better all season. Overall this whole squad played great tennis against a tough Fargo South JV. (JV comments by coach Erik Kringlie)
Against Bismarck Century, we played a potential line-up we could use at regionals. Collin played a complete fantastic match against Pitcher, pushing him every step of the way. Austin stepped up and played with confidence and footwork. He almost took out a placer at #2 singles in the West Fargo Invite. Century’s team drops off after the first three, so our doubles rolled dropping a total of five games. As we couldn’t nab a singles match, we lost 3-2.
Legacy is the #1 team in the west and showed it against us. Blake struggled on the side against the wind while his opponent is used to playing in windy conditions at Legacy. Derek played well with good strategy and footwork, but Krom is a doubles state championship contender and was too much. At three singles, Kai had a great match against their true #3 and a senior. He moved the ball, he played consistent, his feet were in the right spot, he was aggressive, he put balls away, he had his best singles match of the year. He came off in a great mood and wanted to play some more. Great attitude Kai.
In doubles, Collin and Austin couldn’t find their rhythm together like against Fargo South. Seth and Bennett were down 3-6 in the super tiebreaker and won six points in a row to go up 9-6 before winning 10-7. Great comeback – always believing in yourself no matter the situation can lead to great things!
Our JV players were a very bright spot against Century and Legacy. Trey, Casey, and Ethan stayed positive the entire time. They worked together in doubles, smiled, communicated, and trusted each other. Their effort was always at 100%. And they played with great sportsmanship. They hit our three Hi-Liner pillars and their level of play was very high because of that. Great job you three!
Next action is at Fargo Davies on Monday with a 4pm start time. This is a make-up match. We are also away on Tuesday at Grand Forks Central with a 3:30pm start time
