GWINNER, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – For the third time in the first four weeks, Oakes (4-0) hit the road and came away with a 39-14 road victory.
The Tornadoes offense was turned away on its first drive by turning the ball over on downs deep in Sargent County territory. The defense would pick up the slack on the second play of the Sargent County drive when David Schmitz took an interception to the endzone for Oakes’ third pick-6 of the year.
Oakes added on a field goal to make it 10-0 before Sargent County would return the favor with a pick-6 of their own to make it 10-6. Howie Neustel, who played for Oakes’ legion baseball team this past summer, intercepted quarterback Garret Meehl on a screen and put Sargent County on the board.
As soon as Sargent County pulled within one score, Oakes responded with a 14 yard touchdown pass from Meehl to Brackin Awender. It was Awender’s 3rd TD reception this season.
Oakes, with a 18-6 lead, was set to get the ball back with around two minutes to go in the first half after forcing Sargent County to punt. However, Sargent County had trouble with the snap on the punt and Oakes lineman Gabe Quandt brought the punter down for a loss setting up a first and goal for the Tornadoes offense.
Queue Logan Sell. On the first play, Sell found the endzone from 4 yards out to make it a 25-6 lead at the break.
Meehl would throw his second TD of the day in the 2nd half to Ashton Biesterfeld from 57 yards out to put icing, and Schmitz would add on his first rushing touchdown of the season.
Finally before the game ended, Sargent County’s offense found the endzone on a 27 yard touchdown pass from Avery McFarland to Bryar Erickson.
Oakes has scored at least 30 points in three consecutive games headed into homecoming week. Oakes will welcome Lisbon to town and play the Broncos for the first time in 15 years.
