JAMESTOWN, N.D. (NewsDakota.com) – Drones are one of the fastest growing technologies in the world. Because of this, rules and regulations are ever changing.

FAA-certified drone pilot and University of Jamestown Social Media Specialist Logan Adams says they use drone technology at the University, but he has to constantly be on the lookout for changes in flight rules.

Drone flights are overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Adams says because of the changing rules, even hobbyist pilots must follow the different guidelines.

Adams says by flying a drone that’s been unapproved for flight by the FAA, you would be breaking the law and potentially putting a manned aircraft at risk.

Adams says while there may be many new rules for all drone pilots to follow, there’s a really easy tool called LAANC (Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability) that can be used to request a flight in your area.

Adams says drones for commercial use need to be registered if they’re more than 1/2 a pound, must be registered and the pilot must have their Part 107 certificate. You don’t need a license if you’re a hobby flyer.

Adams says if anyone has questions about drones and flights, you’re encouraged to contact him at Logan.Adams@gmail.com or visit faadronezone.faa.gov.
