Coach Matt Nielson’s Thoughts:
Many players had their best tennis day of the year on both sides net. Coach Tony of Shanley said that the Hi-Liners brought the best out in his kids and they played by far the best match of the season. Even though we lost 6-3, this was our best match of the season as well.

Austin poached and played defense well in doubles. At one point, he returned two overheads in a row from one of the hardest hitting players in the state to keep him and Blake in the point. In singles, he played in the moment and attacked and believed the entire match. With his mentality of one point at a time and giving 100% effort, he soundly defeated a singles state-qualifier from last year and the third place finisher at third flight singles from the WF Invite. Austin had his best day in a Hi-Liner tennis uniform today. Great work.

Derek Bear was down 2-5 in the first set when he started attacking the ball. He was able to level the set at 5 a piece before dropping it 7-5. He played a solid match against a good #5 and was a point or two away from splitting sets. Blake had two tough matches against a player that is capable of winning the state tournament if he is dialed in. Blake moved well and had a problem solver mentality on the court and broke Finnian’s serve twice. Austin was on fire in #3 singles, but it was Seth’s opponent who was on fire at #4 singles. Watching the match, Anderson was hitting unreal forehands with anticipation and footwork.

Kai and Seth epitomized our team’s resolve this year. After losing the first set 6-4, we tried playing two back on returns to take the pressure off of our returner. This resulted in quality returns and then attacking the net with momentum moving forward. We dominated the second set. In the third set, we went down 4-5 but came back to win the next three games in a row to win the match. Our Hi-Liners have the mentality that they will compete giving 100% no matter the score meaning that coming back from 15-40 down or 4-5 down is always a possibility. Great work.

Bennett had a solid win for us at 6 singles. Bennett played low risk tennis, but at the same time used great footwork and attacked the ball. He shaped his shots, moved his opponent, and used consistency as his opponent would spray balls. He stayed the course and let his opponent make the error or hit offensively when given a short ball. Way to find the strategy to win.

Collin put a complete match together in singles today. He lost to Jelinski last season 6-0, 6-0. This time, each point, each game, and each set was extremely competitive. Collin struck the ball very well with impeccable footwork, anticipation, and preparation. He move Jelinski around, varied his game with slices and short balls, and had a ton of fun playing tennis. Collin has shown moments of brilliance, but today he was on from start to finish. It was so much fun to watch him today. Excellent work!

We lost 3-6, but today was more of a success than any of our team wins. Our team hit with confidence leading to great rallies. We were on our toes and put the ball away in doubles. We were positive and gave 100% effort, playing every point in the moment giving us a shot to win it. Our players took and enacted on coaching leading to success. Players analyzed and coached themselves on the court leading to success. Today was a joy to coach and watch as our team continues to make strides late into the season.

Coach Susan Kringlie’s Thoughts:
On a hot and very windy day, the JV players got a lot of match play at doubles and also singles. Alex Rogelstad played smart tennis today and came to net successfully in his singles matches. Jayden Johnson and Miles Taylor teamed up for some fierce net play and power returns. Gabriel Littledog learned how to compensate for the wind and stroked the ball back deep keeping his opponents playing defense. Max Magnuson never gave up and kept on fighting to keep his opponents on the run. Overall everyone worked very hard and played with true Hi-liner grit in tough conditions!
Next action for the Hi-Liners is home on Thursday at 4pm against Fargo South. This will also be our annual Hi-Liner Tennis BBQ hosted by the Valley City Tennis Association starting at 5pm. This BBQ is free to players, parents, and all tennis fans. Please come out and support your boys tennis team against the Bruins.
I LOVE being a Hi-Liner!
